Callas, which are often referred to as calla lilies, are actually unrelated to the Lilium family. Instead, they're members of the Araceae family, which includes anthuriums, caladiums and some philodendrons. They're natives of South Africa, where they grow so abundantly that they're viewed as common roadside plants and are called "pig lilies." Their genus, Zantedeschia, is named for 19th century Italian botanist Francesco Zantedeschia. The genus includes six species that have been hybridized to create numerous cultivars.
