Flower of the month : Aster - Flower Station

Aster flowers are the epitome for the month of September. So much so that florists call the flowers simply September. A typical seasonal bouquet during these early autumn days just has to contain aster. The pretty small flowers bring colour and life to any arrangement and remind the recipient of a bouquet of sunny summer days past.

Aster flowers take their name from the Greek word for star; the flowers look like many rayed stars and they are the stars of the autumn flower season, too. They used to be called Michaelmas daisies as they are invariably in bloom for that holiday. They would make up a large part of the floral decoration for the festivities commonly taking place on that day. Today, they are beautiful embellishment for any occasion on any day.

If you are into gardening, the aster plants are a good choice to bring colour to your autumn garden. They are prolific bloomers and allow you to use them for inside decoration as well as keeping them outside. They are not very demanding. As the flowers have many small petals, they will not dominate any gardening scheme be it in colour or form.

The advantage of the small petals is something that florists make ready use of. Thanks to the many small blooms on a stem, the flowers are perfect as fillers for bouquets; they can be used to give a countrified air to any flower combination and add colour without trying to dominate the creation.

When choosing your own flowers for a bouquet in the florists’ shop this time of the year, remember to ask them for aster if you are not sure what they look like. Have them hold these lovely little blooms together with the choice of flowers you already made to decide if you want to add a few to enhance your main choice.
