There are a few legends behind this fairytale-like flower. One is that flowers sprung up from the Virgin Mary’s tears when she sat crying in front of the cross, giving it the colloquial name of Our Ladies Tears. Another legend is that nightingales only begin to sing when they smell the sweet scent of the Lilies blooming in May. Ironically, Lily of the Valley is said to be poisonous but also has a history of aiding the cure of heart ailments.
