History and Meaning of Tulips

The tulip is one of the world’s most easily recognised and loved flowers. The meanings of tulips coupled with the immediately identifiable shape of their colourful blooms make them a comfortable flower choice. They are not too elegant, too romantic, too big, too small, or too bright; the tulip is always just right.

The tulip originated centuries ago in Persia and Turkey, where it played a significant role in the art and culture of the time. The tulip’s name comes from the Persian word for turban, because in full bloom tulips have a turban-like shape. As Europeans began taking to tulips, the flower’s popularity spread quickly, particularly in the Netherlands where a phenomenon dubbed tulip mania set in at one point during the 17th century. Tulips have remained extremely popular in the Netherlands. Every year Amsterdam celebrates National Tulip Day in January. On this day Dutch tulip growers build a gigantic tulip garden on Dam Square, and people come and pick a free bouquet of flowers. This marks the beginning of tulip season.

The meaning of tulips is generally perfect love. Like many flowers, different colours of tulips also often carry their own significance. Red tulips are most strongly associated with true love, while purple symbolises royalty. The meaning of yellow tulips has evolved somewhat, from once representing hopeless love to now being a common expression for cheerful thoughts and sunshine. White tulips are used to claim worthiness or to send a message of forgiveness. Conveying so many different emotions, it is no surprise to see just why these flowers have endured for so long and why their use extends from wedding bouquets, sympathy arrangements and floral tributes, all the way to Thank You, Birthday, Get Well, Congratulations, New Baby and Thinking of You gifts.

How to take care of tulip flowers?

Tulips are often referred to as the dancing flowers. So, don’t be surprised to see your once straight and upright tulips leaning and drooping all over the vase after a couple of days or so. But fear not – your flowers are certainly not wilting. This effect is simply due to tulips growing after being cut and the large heads respond with their direction towards this light. Simply readjust the arrangement, or let them choose their own path and dance the night away. Your tulips from Flower Station will arrive with closed heads and buds just ready to open and as such they will be sure to last, but to make them last even longer here are a few handy tips. Remember, the tulip is a thirsty flower, so make sure it is given plenty of clean, cool, fresh water. Before placing the flowers in the vase make sure to cut the bottom of the stem at a steep angle and do not let the ends dry before putting them back into water. Any excess leaves should not be left in the water. As with most flowers, temperature is the key and flowers should, as much as possible, be kept away from any sources of heat. Cut flower food is not needed for tulips.

How do you stop cut tulips from drooping?

Since tulips have a heavy water intake, it is key for stopping them from drooping. Tulips should be watered frequently. For better water intake, diagonal cuts on the stem below the water level will help tulips to stay upright. Tulips bloom better in cold, shallow water, so 1/3 of the vase should be filled with cold water for perfect results.
