Meaning and History of Roses

Roses have roots going back about 35 million years, and through time they have evolved into the most favoured flower in the world. Along with the cultivation of this mesmerising flower, which was around 5000 years ago, began the cultivation of many stories involving the roses.

In ancient Greek and Roman times, the roses became more precisely the symbols of love and beauty. That's why it was sacred to several goddesses like Isis and Aphrodite, and being used as a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Nowadays, a bouquet of red roses is often used to show true love. In the UK and in many parts of the world, roses are a main Valentine’s Day gift. The rose is also a national flower of England and the United States and roses are also used as an emblem of the Rugby Football Union.

A rose’s symbolism varies by the colour of the rose:

  • Red roses symbolise love and romance and are the perfect Valentine’s Day rose

  • Pink roses symbolise gratitude, grace, admiration, and joy

  • Orange roses symbolise enthusiasm and passion

  • Yellow roses symbolise friendship

  • White roses symbolise innocence and purity

Rose Care for a Lasting Gift

Proper rose care is essential if your rose flower gift is meant to remain as beautiful and fresh for as long as possible. And though we at Flower Station will make sure that the roses delivered are always fresh, roses should never be left without water. Changing the water regularly and using a clean vase will help, as it gets rid of a lot of bacteria that harm your roses. When putting the roses back in the water remember to slant cut the stems, as this unclogs the pores and enables the flower to bring in more nutrients. Cut flower food is also essential as it provides the extra nutrients in the water that will further help nourish the rose and prolong its vase life. Can I Have Roses Delivered to a Hospital?

Most hospitals accept deliveries of roses. Please give us as much information on the delivery address, for example, the ward and wing of the particular hospital to aid our drivers in the delivery process.

Are roses toxic to cats and dogs?

No, roses themselves are not toxic to cats and dogs. They may experience an upset stomach if they eat too much, but the petals and stems of thornless roses are safe for your pet. However, there is risk for trauma to the mouth and paws from the thorns.

Can roses grow in shade?

Most roses thrive in a sunny spot. However, some grow surprisingly well in shady areas, as long as the shade isn't caused by trees, which take a lot of moisture from the soil. Very few roses can take full shade – bear in mind that the minimum you'll need to provide is around four hours of sun per day.

How do roses grow?

Rose seeds develop inside the rose hip, which is the fruit of the rose brush. Rose hips develop below the flower. The hips become red, yellow or orange throughout the summer and are full of seeds by autumn. The botanical term for rose seeds is "achene." They are creamy white and will sprout in 8 to 12 weeks.

When do roses bloom?

Roses start blooming in late May and continue to do so through early fall. They are often considered to be at their best in June, which is why roses are considered June's birth flower.

Which roses smell the best?

Garden roses are rich in fragrance, however there are many different breeds. An award-winning hybrid tea rose created in 1965, 'Mister Lincoln' rose is still a top choice for gardens today. It features rich, velvety-red petals packed with a strong fragrance. Some rose experts say 'Mister Lincoln' set the standard for red roses.

Why do roses have thorns?

Scientists believe that roses have thorns to protect them from being eaten by animals who might be attracted to them due to their sweet fragrance.

Will roses grow in pots?

Most roses grow well in containers as long as root space is sufficient and care is appropriate. Containers of at least 60cm to 80cm in depth and at least 40 to 50 cm in diameter are recommended for full-sized rose varieties, and generally the deeper the better for rose health, growth, and blooming.

Received 12 red roses for my partner and was delighted with them. Lovely scent and rich, velvety petals. Really glad they made it with no complications. Confident of the service – would buy again.
