The word ‘wreath’ stems from the word ‘writhe’ in old England, which meant to ‘write’ or to ‘twist’. Indeed, Christmas wreaths are made by twisting evergreen branches into a circle, before they are decorated with various flowers and other accents. The Romans began the tradition of hanging Christmas wreaths on their doors, using wreaths as a symbol of high social status and pride. Women and athletes also donned wreaths as a symbol of pride and honour.

Since Christmas wreaths are made from evergreen branches, they represent eternal life. This is because evergreens were admired as one of the only trees that were able to survive the harsh conditions of winter, becoming a symbol of resilience. The evergreen branches, together with the circular shape of the wreath represent faith, life and hope.
