What is International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day takes place on 8th March every year. It is a national holiday in many countries, which honours and celebrates women. Not only do we look back and champion how much women have accomplished, but we also look forward to how we can promote women’s rights even more and take further steps towards gender equality.
History of International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day was first observed in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, with over one million people attending rallies to mark the day. In 1975, the United Nations recognised International Women’s Day and in 1977 a United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace was proclaimed to be observed on any day of the year by Member States.
Do we still need an International Women’s Day?
While society has taken big steps towards gender equality, there is still a very long way to go before we achieve complete equality. Women and girls around the world continue to face huge injustices so we must continue to celebrate women and come together to ensure that the women and girls of tomorrow are able to have bigger and brighter futures.
How can I take part in International Women’s Day?
Everyone around the world can participate in International Women’s Day. After all, there is no right or wrong way to celebrate women! Whether you want to participate in International Women’s Day campaigns online; shop at female-owned businesses; attend a charity fundraiser; or simply show some love to the important women in your life, nothing is too little or too much!

When we inspire others towards inclusion and understanding, we create stronger relationships and foster empowerment, creating a world in which we are able to lift each other up and thrive. A more inclusive world is a better world!
How to celebrate International Women’s Day With Flowers

While there are countless ways to celebrate International Women’s Day, you simply cannot go wrong with flowers! Flowers have long been a symbol of gratitude and appreciation. When we send someone flowers, we are sending messages of love, admiration and thanks, making the recipient feel special and loved! Flowers have also traditionally been associated with women and femininity; their delicacy, individuality and beauty have become a symbol of feminine grace.
While International Women’s Day can be celebrated by giving any flowers, the traditional flower of International Women’s Day is the Mimosa. In Italy in 1946, feminists selected Mimosas as a symbol of female strength to celebrate the first International Women’s Day after World War Two - incredibly poignant in today’s difficult times.
Aside from the profound symbolic meaning of Mimosa flowers, their vibrant yellow flowers with rich green foliage make them incredibly uplifting, making anyone smile!
