Galentine's Day - Celebrate Female Friendship

Whoever said Valentine’s Day was only about celebrating romantic love was wrong. There’s a special day dedicated to celebrating female friendship - Galentine’s Day. Whether you're joyously single, happily coupled or somewhere in between, taking a day to recognise the importance of friendship can only help strengthen some of the most important relationships in our lives.

Where does Galentine’s Day come from?

Galentine’s Day was created in 2010 by Amy Poehler’s character Leslie Knope in the American TV series Parks and Recreation. This fictional holiday has gained a lot of traction in the real world since then. And as Leslie describes it, “It’s only the best day of the year! Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it—breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies.”

It’s a day to show your appreciation for your female friends and family who are always by your side - the ones who stick with you through thick and thin and always have your back. And more than that it’s a day to celebrate the power of female friendships and relationships. It’s celebrated on the day before Valentine’s Day - 13th of February.

How to celebrate Galentine’s Day?

This day is all about the women in your life who are always there for you. Be it your sister, mother, or friend, female friendships are very important and there is nothing like it. Girls like to hang out, talk, share secrets, and create memories all the time so there aren’t any specific traditions for this day. Head to your favourite cafe, have a picnic in the park, spend an afternoon with your gal pal at the salon, or just order in a pizza and watch movies.

In the TV show Leslie Knope takes her gal pals to brunch - so you could of course do the same! Share a couple of mimosas, treat yourself with a waffle and just be with your friends.
