Author: Libbi Cohen

Whether you’re working in the office or from home, you’ll find that you spend most of your time in one place. Therefore, it’s so important that you make your workspace somewhere that is uplifting and positive. It has also been scientifically proven that  keeping plants in your office can boost productivity and reduce fatigue. If you find yourself staring at a bright computer screen all day, or sifting through piles of paperwork at your desk, adding a bit of life and colour can go a long way. Simply add plants to vacant windowsills, shelves or the edge of your desk to fill your workspace with a vibrant burst of colour and add some life and energy to your office.

We have selected the ten best plants that will brighten up your office space and will be relatively stress-free and easy to care for indoors.

Bonsai Tree

A bonsai tree is the perfect addition to any office, big or small. Bonsai trees have been respected for their ability to draw energy into a room and for sharing this energy with those nearby. For this reason, Bonsai trees make a perfect office plant, adding happiness and life to your workplace. Bonsai trees are also relatively easy to care for - ensure that your tree is exposed to little sun, a little water and an occasional bit of fertiliser.

Chinese Evergreen

Chinese Evergreens are one of the most common houseplants. Not only will these colourful plants brighten up any office, but they are also relatively easy to care for. Simply place your plant in an area that ensures it receives little or indirect sunlight. You only need to water it when the soil is dry to touch - this should be every week or so.

Peace Lily

Peace Lilies boast large white blooms in addition to their greenery, making them a gorgeous choice of plant for your office. They are an excellent choice for an air-conditioned office as they survive well in cool, dry environments. This also means that they should be kept away from direct sunlight. If you have pets, you may wish to avoid these plants as they can get sick if they ingest them.

Aloe Vera

Not only do  Aloe Vera plants have a fresh, vibrant appearance, but they also help to purify the air, making your office a healthier space. Aloe Vera plants produce aloe gel which has healing properties, such as treating sunburn, reducing itching and killing bacteria. Another reason why Aloe Vera makes a great office plant is that it is relatively easy to care for, just ensure that it receives adequate sunlight.

Snake Plant

The Snake Plant (Sansevieria) is a tall, beautiful plant with dark green leaves. Since they are a large plant, they would look great in the corner of an office, placed on the floor. Like Aloe Vera plants, Snake Plants are a healthy option for your office as they convert carbon dioxide to oxygen very quickly (overnight). A huge advantage of having a Snake Plant in your office is that they require low maintenance to survive. Simply keep your plant in an area that has little sunlight and water it once a month. These plants should be potted in a large, sturdy pot due to their large, heavy leaves.

Lemon Balm

Known for their vibrant, green leaves, Lemon Balm plants are a gorgeous addition to any office. Not only are they visually beautiful, but they also give off a beautiful fragrance that will improve any office space. These are relatively easy to care for as they can survive in both the sun and the shade. Simply make sure to water these plants daily.

Cactus

A cactus is a great choice for an office plant because there is a big a variety to choose from, with there being over 2,000 different types of cacti in the world. Their unique look will brighten up your office and they come in all shapes and sizes. While they require very little water to survive and can last days without it, they will only survive in a space that has a lot of sunlight. For this reason, do not keep your cactus in an office with little sunlight.

Kentia Palm

If you have a big office, with excess space that needs filling, a  Kentia Palm is the perfect option. These plants have long stems and large leaves and will brighten up your office with its vibrant, bright greenery. They require very little light and they grow very quickly, making them a relatively low-maintenance plant.

ZZ plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

The  ZZ plant will provide a wonderful amount of greenery to your office. The best part about these plants is that they are widely known for being so easy to care for. They have fat stalks and large roots which retain a lot of water, meaning that they don’t have to be constantly watered. They can also tolerate low levels of light, which makes them the perfect plant for an office as they can survive all year round, even during those dark winter months. These plants are perfect for those who are hard-working and busy as, while this is certainly not recommended, they are able to withstand neglect from their owners.

Calathea

Calatheas are beautiful indoor plants grown for their stunning foliage. The top sides of the leaves look as if they have been painted with beautiful brushstrokes – they’re often meticulously patterned, in many shades of green. The undersides of the leaves are often burgundy red. Calathea plants are popular for office spaces because they are generally easy to care as they prefer indirect sunlight and they look great.
