The Gladiolus

Gladioli boast many flowers which grow in clusters on one side of the stem. Due to the gladiolus’s long, thin shape, it is known to many as a sword lily. In fact, in Latin, ‘gladiolus’ stems from the word ‘gladius’, which translates to ‘sword’.

These flowers bloom in gorgeous shades of burgundy, green, lavender, purple, rose, pink, white and yellow. These flowers appear at the beginning of summer and can grow up to five feet tall.

The gladiolus symbolises sincerity, strength, healing and honour, as well as moral character and remembrance. In the Victorian era, romantics believed that the gladiolus flower was so beautiful that it could, like Cupid’s arrow, pierce someone’s heart with love. The gladiolus has also been said to represent love at first sight.

Each colour symbolises a different meaning:

  • Red: passion and romance
  • Pink: compassion
  • White: innocence
  • Yellow: happiness and friendship
  • Purple: beauty and luck

What do gladioli say about August babies?

People born in August are strong characters and natural leaders. They are also great friends due to their honest, loyal and compassionate nature.

The Poppy

Poppies grow all over the world. The most recognisable poppies are the Iceland poppy, Oriental poppy and the California poppy. The poppy’s name comes from the Latin word ‘pappa’, which means ‘milk’. This is because the buds and stalks of some poppy species produce a milky, latex-like substance when they are cut open.

The sap of the opium poppy has been harvested for use in pharmaceutical opiates and illicit drugs. Fans of the Wizard of Oz will remember the famous scene of Dorothy uncontrollably falling asleep in a field of poppies! However, the poppy is most commonly used for its seeds which are used in cooking and baking.

Poppies are most commonly used to symbolise remembrance, dating back to the Ancient Greeks and Romans who believed that poppies gave peace to the departed. However, in East Asia, poppies symbolise love between two people. The poppy is also the state flower of California.

What do poppies say about August babies?

Poppies symbolise the caring nature of August babies. They also represent the strength of those born in August. These qualities combined, make an August baby a valued friend and a well-loved member of the family.
